Miyuki Tani is a Japanese Drummer, rhythm coach, Arranger, Sound designer, Urban planner, and Social entrepreneur based in the United States. She has performed with Magic Slim, who was nominated for the 66th Annual Grammy Awards[1]. She was also a nominee artist for the 54th Grammy Awards with "Curtis King".[2]as the main drummer on his world tour[3]. As a rhythm coach, Arranger, and Sound artist, she has worked with various performers and artists worldwide[4].

Early life and career

Miyuki began her professional drumming career abroad at the age of 25, performing alongside Grammy-nominated artists like Magic Slim[1]. Over her career, she has collaborated with artists from around 60 countries in approximately 700 improvisation sessions, performing in front of more than 100,000 people. Her drumming repertoire covers a wide range of American music styles from the 1950s to the 1990s, including Blues, Rock 'n' Roll, Pop, Funk, Pop, Country.[5]

In 2024, she started a new project as a silent beat designer under the artist name "Ikuyi Minat," producing music as a beat artist and sound designer.

Miyuki contributed a piece called "Woven by Fate," which incorporates the sound of Kurume Kasuri weaving machines, for the "Tradition into the Future". exhibition, held as part of "New York Textile Month 2024". . She will also provide two new songs for an art exhibition by designer "Ao Miyasaka". at a New York gallery in February 2025, both featuring the sound of Kurume Kasuri weaving machines in a Lofi hip hop style.

Music career

At the age of 18 in 2002, Miyuki moved to Tokyo and enrolled at Vantan Design Institute, where she studied music theory, performance, and digital music production (DTM). She gained early exposure by appearing in the music video for the band Quruli’s song "Otoko no Ko to Onna no Ko." Inspired by these experiences, Miyuki became captivated by drumming at the age of 19, studying under Tetsuya Harada, the drummer of "The Chaban"..

In 2006, at the age of 23, she passed an audition for the band led by guitarist Haruhiko Mera, who had previously discovered the talents of Toshimitsu Nagai, support drummer for GLAY, and Tomohisa Kawazoe, bassist for LINDBERG. Through her activities with Haruhiko Mera, who had experience performing in the U.S., Miyuki became more conscious of pursuing a career abroad.[5]

In 2008, at the age of 25, Miyuki began her professional drumming career abroad. In 2009, she performed at the "Japan Blues Festival"., sharing the stage with Grammy-nominated artist "Curtis King".[2][6]. Her exceptional performance caught the attention of Michael Blackmore, the Vice Director of Sagebrush Productions, who recognized her talent and introduced her to Magic Slim, leading to an impromptu session with him.[7]

Miyuki was enthusiastically scouted by Magic Slim, who is renowned as a legend in the American blues scene and known for discovering famous musicians like Muddy Waters and Howlin' Wolf.[8]

From 2010, Miyuki became the main drummer for "Curtis King".’s international tours[6], performing at events like the "2010 Hue Festival".[9] in Vietnam and Macau's Chamber Concert Series at Macau Military Club[10]. She also collaborated with Riki Hendrix, cousin of Jimi Hendrix, at the The Venetian Macao[11].

In 2012, Miyuki performed a solo percussion concert at the African Beach Hotel in Ghana during the Summer Festival 2012, where she was awarded Best Woman Performance Award. From 2010 to 2015, she continued her performances in Tokyo at venues like "What the Dickens!"., "Ruby Room"., and "Pink Cow"., playing with musicians from over 60 countries in more than 700 live improvisation sessions.

Urban Planner Career

Parallel to her music career, Miyuki joined "Oriental Consultants Global". in 2008 and worked as an Urban Planner and urban transportation development planner, handling overseas project planning and participating in large-scale projects valued in the trillions of yen. She also contributed to the advancement of Japanese technology in India through Japan External Trade Organization and the Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry.

In 2018, she became certified as a Professional Engineer in Urban and Regional Planning.

Rhythm Coach and Arranger Career

In 2020, Miyuki moved to the United States and began working as a rhythm coach, arranger, and rhythm educator. From 2021 to 2022, she remotely produced English learning materials for a children’s facility in Shibuya, Tokyo, developing 35 English nursery rhyme arrangements across various musical genres and creating 75 sound designs[12][13]. The project successfully raised 1.5 million yen through crowdfunding[14] and distributed 1,000 copies of its educational materials.

Social Entrepreneur Career

In June 2024, Miyuki established ONTSUBU LLC in the U.S. and became its president. In September of the same year, she was appointed as an external director for n"VIS Corporation". in Japan, responsible for hosting the Space-Out Competition (ぼーっとする大会)[15]in Japan.
